Where Does It Work?

Everyone’s skin ages differently and JUVÉDERM® XC may be used to rejuvenate multiple problem areas.* From smile lines to vertical lip lines, you can smooth away unwanted wrinkles and restore natural contours

  • Smile Lines (or “Parentheses”)Δ

Smile lines, or nasolabial folds, run vertically from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth. This is a popular treatment area that many women seek help with.

While individual results vary, after just one JUVÉDERM® XC treatment most patients see a real difference, with a noticeable softening of the smile lines.

After all, parentheses have a place but not on your face!

  • Marionette LinesΔ

Marionette lines are the vertical facial wrinkles and folds that form below the corners of the mouth. These lines can sometimes give the appearance of sagging and/or a downturned expression.

  • Vertical Lip LinesΔ

Facial wrinkles above and around the lips can begin to appear over time due to ordinary lip muscle movement. However, environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress can also contribute to how the area around our lips ages and the formation of vertical lip lines. The good news is that JUVÉDERM® XC dermal filler can soften those with typically just one treatment!

    How does JUVÉDERM® XC Work?

Dr. Jones tells us why smile lines form and how JUVÉDERM® XC adds volume to the skin, instantly rejuvenating the area.

Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds - like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth.

Using a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® XC is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.

Read on for more details about how JUVÉDERM® XC makes those parentheses disappear:

    • 1. Understanding Where Wrinkles Form

Your skin consists of two layers known as the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, acts as the skin’s primary defense against the environment. The dermis, or innermost layer of the skin, is composed primarily of connective tissue and provides the skin with a support network. Most facial wrinkles and deeper nasolabial folds occur within the dermal layer of the skin.

    • 2 Our Skin’s Natural Moisturizer

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule. Much like a sponge, its primary function is to bind and absorb water, which creates volume in the face. In this way, Hyaluronic acid can be thought of as the body’s internal moisturizer. But, as we age, HA diminishes, which contributes to the presence of lines and folds. JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to diminish wrinkles and nasolabial folds.

    • 3 Experiencing Rejuvenation

JUVÉDERM® XC dermal filler is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Using a fine needle, your healthcare professional eases JUVÉDERM® XC under the skin to fill the soft tissue of the dermis. This adds volume and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and nasolabial folds instantly.

While there are a variety of hyaluronic acid fillers, JUVÉDERM® XC is uniquely formulated. A next generation HA filler, JUVÉDERM® XC uses a manufacturing process called HYLACROSS technology. HYLACROSS gives JUVÉDERM® XC its special smooth-gel structure that holds up over time. That’s why JUVÉDERM® XC is the first smooth-consistency HA gel and the only HA filler that’s FDA approved* to last up to one year with only one treatment.

      Safety Considerations

With any cosmetic treatment, safety is the first concern. As always, it’s important to consult with your doctor before deciding on a wrinkle treatment. Because JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is a non-surgical, in-office treatment, most patients experience minimal recovery and downtime.

JUVÉDERM® and JUVÉDERM® XC Side Effects

JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel is generally well tolerated. Most side effects are mild to moderate in nature and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are generally biocompatible, which means allergy skin testing is not required prior to treatment.

      Allergies

If you're considering treatment with JUVÉDERM® injectable gel, your healthcare professional should ask about your medical history to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for treatment. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel for facial wrinkles and folds should not be used in patients who have:

      • Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or history or presence of multiple severe allergies
      • A history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins
      • JUVÉDERM® should not be used in patients with a history of allergies to lidocaine.

      Post-treatment Considerations

Your healthcare professional will tell you what to expect following treatment with JUVÉDERM® injectable gel. You should ask your healthcare professional when makeup may be applied after your treatment.

You should avoid the following for at least 24 hours after treatment:

      • Strenuous exercise
      • Consumption of alcoholic beverages
      • Extended exposure to sun or heat
